The BB&O Law Society is a local law society which represents and supports the legal community in its area. For this reason, there are various categories of membership to choose from, which are designed to address the needs of the local profession.

Individual membership is renewable annually and is open to all solicitors (including retired solicitors and consultants), trainee solicitors, law academics, law students, paralegals, legal executives, and in-house barristers, provided you are in our constituency.

Membership is FREE for all law/LPC students, paralegals, legal executives, trainee solicitors, and employed solicitors with up to 3 years’ PQE. We also offer a discounted membership fee if you are an employed solicitor in a public authority, government agency, company or other organisation with 3+ years’ PQE, or if you are a locum, consultant, academic, or retired solicitor.

In additional to individual membership, we offer corporate membership to legal practices and in-house legal departments in organisations. It is a more cost-effective way of offering membership to all qualified solicitors covered by one annual fee, based on the number of qualified solicitors in the firm or legal department who work in our constituency.

We are currently also considering offering preferential rates to legal executives, trainee solicitors and paralegals working for our corporate members who wish to attend our courses and events.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP

The benefits of membership are numerous and include access to various special offers and discounted rates to attend BB&O Law Society events, as well as receiving a copy of our “BiBliO” magazine.

Events organised by the Society include the Annual Dinner and Legal Excellence Awards, and business networking events. We are also planning to introduce a ceremony to welcome Newly Qualified Solicitors to the legal profession, and are collaborating with the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Junior Lawyers Division to hold a number of joint events throughout the year. This year our Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony was held at the prestigious Ashmolean Museum in Oxford on Friday 14 October 2022, with renowned guest speaker David Alexander QC, Joint Head of Chambers at South Square.

One of our core aims is to promote legal excellence throughout our constituency. As part of that, our annual Legal Excellence Awards give individuals and legal teams the chance to highlight their business, their skill and their community contribution. They also give us the chance to celebrate the hard work and inspirational achievements across the legal profession in our region.

The Legal Excellence Awards celebrate some of the most outstanding talent and achievements in the legal profession in our three counties. The annual dinner and awards ceremony offers the opportunity to recognise and showcase the work and diversity of our profession in Berks, Bucks & Oxon, both in terms of the people involved and the work they undertake.

The categories for the awards are:

• Lawyer of the Year
• Junior Lawyer of the Year
• Pro Bono / Corporate Social Responsibility Award
• Solicitor-Advocate of the Year
• Law Firm of the Year
• Edward Pilling Award (a new award to be given to an outstanding sole practitioner)
